Family shoots, while enjoyable, present a few unique challenges. Principally, aligning looks and smiles, especially with a young child. I try to capture the 'personality' of the family, and like to chat ahead of time to try and develop ideas.
Parents try, understandably, to get the little one(s) to smile and look cute, and often they will oblige when the parents are looking at the child. This is, of course, also a good image, but we really want a few great shots of the family all smiling and looking at the camera. During the shoot, I advise the parents to follow my direction, and what I say 'eyes to camera' they look at the camera. That way I can control the ratio of photos where everyone is looking at the camera.
Camera: Nikon D4
Lens: 70-200 f/2.8 V2, 24-70 f/2.8

This family was a pleasure to photograph, easy-going and open to try things.
